It motivated me to learn that Bella Soul was offering the Villasenor Latinx Scholarship this year. I could have not be any more driven to apply. It pleases me to know that there are organizations that devote endless efforts to give people like me a boost in life, thus facilitating the road ahead of us.

I was born in the Dominican Republic and moved to Florida 7 years ago which forced my family and I to learn a different language while adapting to the norms of a new country. This transition was tough, but like many other immigrants, we persevered to reach our goals. Of course, I wouldn’t have been capable of accomplishing these matters without the support of my educators and generous people like you guys!

I acknowledge that my diagnosis of epilepsy has affected my family more than myself. It has created obstacles inhibiting me from leading a “normal” life, preventing me from doing things I was really looking forward, such as driving and living an independent lifestyle. I feel more for my mom since she went through a lot of fear and uncertainty, especially the first year. This led her to be more informed along with having more sympathy for others dealing with the same situation. With all the bad came good as strengthening her faith and hope because of extensive research and giving people like the Bella Soul board.  Nevertheless, it has made me appreciate the things I CAN and I WILL do.

Again, I would like you all to know that I’m honored to be the recipient of the 2021 Villasenor Latinx Scholarship. Much thanks and utmost appreciation for all that you do and the mission that you and your organization stand for. I wish you all the best in your goals to help other people in the future. My family and I are so thankful! Much respect from the heart.

Sincerely,

Manuel Gutierrez
